Thurka Sangaramoorthy, PhD, MPH

Cultural & Medical Anthropologist

Dr. Thurka Sangaramoorthy is a cultural and medical anthropologist and global health researcher with over 22 years of experience conducting community-engaged ethnographic research. Thurka supports the project's design and approach as a co-investigator.

Thurkas’s research is broadly concerned with power and subjectivity in global economies of care. She has worked at the intersection of diverse topics, including global health and migration HIV/STD, and environmental health disparities. Her work includes rapid assessments among vulnerable populations in the United States, Africa, and Latin America/Caribbean.

She is an affiliate Professor at Addis Ababa University and the author of four books, including Landsapes of Care, which focuses on immigration and health on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
